About Palo Pinto Mountains State Park
4,871 acres of former ranchland make up this park, purchased from private owners in October 2011 with help from The Nature Conservancy. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department oversees the land, which spans both Palo Pinto and Stephens counties. Its opening was delayed for years due to labor and materials shortages tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, finally welcoming visitors on March 1, 2026, with a grand opening ceremony that April.
