About Fairy Stone State Park

Cross-shaped staurolite crystals, known locally as fairy stones, turn up throughout the surrounding ground and give the park its name. It was the largest of the original six state parks that opened across Virginia on June 15, 1936, a group that marked the start of the state park system. That founding date and its size relative to the others place it among the earliest public lands set aside in Virginia for recreation.
