About Flaming Geyser State Park

A methane pocket 1,000 feet below the surface once fed a flame that burned through a concrete basin, discovered by coal prospectors in the early 1900s when a test hole hit gas and saltwater and sent water and fire 25 feet into the air. That same gas pocket still seeps through a mud hole nearby, forming the "Bubbling Geyser." A short hike along the Green River reaches both features, though the flame itself stopped burning by 2016 as its methane source ran low.
