About Admiral William Standley State Recreation Area
Named for a naval officer, this 45 acre tract along the Eel River was set aside to protect a stand of redwoods rather than for any wartime connection. Fishermen come for salmon and steelhead in the river, while the redwood grove itself draws hikers and picnickers looking for shade among the trees. The land is small compared to many redwood parks but concentrated directly on the riverbank.
