Rugged terrain and the absence of major roads or highways kept this stretch of coastline largely undeveloped, earning it the local name Lost Coast. The park's wilderness sits along the Pacific Ocean on its western edge and shares a northern border with the King Range National Conservation Area. Its remoteness is tied to the unincorporated community of Leggett, the closest settlement to the protected land.
