About Railtown 1897 State Historic Park

Locomotive and rolling stock maintenance buildings still stand at this site, functioning much as they did over a century ago. The grounds preserve the original core of the Sierra Railway of California, a line whose equipment earned it a nickname as a favored backdrop for film productions. These shop buildings carry National Register of Historic Places status as the Sierra Railway Shops Historic District, and the operation continues today under the Sierra Railway name as a working heritage railway within the state park system.
