About Calaveras Big Trees State Park

Two groves of giant sequoia stand at the center of this park, including the northernmost stand of the species in California. Visitors have come to see these trees since 1852, making the site the longest continuously operated tourist attraction in the state. Two of the original exhibition specimens, the Discovery Tree and the Mother of the Forest, were cut down for display and are part of that history. Part of the surviving forest is old growth, recognized as such by the Old-Growth Forest Network.
