Civil rights activists Von Mizell and Eula Johnson led wade-ins in 1961 that pushed for the desegregation of area beaches, an effort honored in the site's current name, Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park. Its former namesake, John U. Lloyd, worked as county attorney for over three decades and helped secure the land that became this park. The park sits along Florida State Road A1A.
