About Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park

Earthen mounds built by a Fort Walton culture chiefdom rise across roughly 83 hectares of preserved ground. The site served as the capital of that Mississippian society, which occupied the region from about 1050 to 1500, and it ranks among the largest mound centers documented in the lower Southeast. What remains today are the ceremonial and residential earthworks left behind by that population.
