About Waimea Canyon State Park
A ten-mile-long canyon cuts across the western side of Kauai, reaching depths of up to 3,000 feet. Its red-tinted soil, exposed by centuries of erosion, gave the canyon its Hawaiian name, meaning "reddish water." The gorge was carved by the Waimea River, fed by rainfall from Mount Waialeale, one of the wettest spots on earth, at the island's center.
