About Apple River Canyon State Park

Botanist Herman Silas Pepoon led a long campaign that pushed the state to buy the initial 297 acres in 1932, laying the groundwork for what the park protects today. Further land purchases since then have expanded the protected area to 1,907 acres, covering much of an 8.5-mile canyon carved by the Apple River. The park exists specifically to preserve that stretch of river canyon and the terrain around it.
