About Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park

A retired waterway runs through the park, once connecting the Mississippi River at Rock Island to the Illinois River near Hennepin. Now dry of commercial traffic, the canal survives as a trail corridor and is listed in its entirety on the National Register of Historic Places. The park preserves this former shipping route across northwest Illinois, giving visitors a fixed path to follow along the old channel.
