About E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park

550 acres in the Freys Hill area of Louisville sit on land once used by Kentucky's old Central State Hospital. The park opened in 1974, named for Judge/Executive Erbon Powers "Tom" Sawyer, who died in a 1969 car accident on Interstate 64 while still in office at age 53. He was the father of journalist Diane Sawyer.
