Hartwick Pines State Park

About Hartwick Pines State Park

9,335 acres make up this recreation area, most of it forest, with a stand of old-growth white and red pines left uncut from the logging era. State officials describe this remnant, called the Hartwick Pines, as an example of how the landscape looked across northern Michigan before large-scale logging began. The absence of the periodic low-intensity fires that once burned through the region has since let hardwoods like sugar maple and beech gain ground within it.
