About Wilderness State Park

Twelve thousand eight hundred acres along Lake Michigan were set aside to preserve forested dune and swale complexes and wetlands, with 26 miles of shoreline included within the boundary. Hiking trails and camping areas run through the terrain, and in 2006 the Michigan Department of Natural Resources approved dedicating 4,492 acres of the property as an official wilderness area. In 2012 the park was designated a Michigan dark sky preserve.
