About Hill Annex Mine State Park

1988 marked the creation of this park around a former open-pit mine on the Mesabi Range, set up to interpret the area's mining heritage. It sat north of Calumet, and the mining activity had exposed fossil material from the Cretaceous era Coleraine Formation. The land itself served as the record of that excavation history, with the pit providing the access point to the older geologic layer beneath it.
