About Savanna Portage State Park

The Savanna Portage, a rugged 6-mile trail once used to link the Mississippi River watershed with Lake Superior, is the feature this park was set aside to protect. The trail crosses a drainage divide separating the West Savanna River, which flows toward the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico, from the East Savanna River, which runs the opposite way toward the Saint Louis River, Lake Superior, and eventually the Atlantic. The park has protected this route since 1961.
