About Council Grove State Park
On July 16, 1855, representatives of the United States government met with the Bitterroot Salish, Pend d'Oreille, and Kootenai here to sign the Hellgate treaty, an event now marked by a monument on site. The 187-acre grounds sit at 3,198 feet in elevation and hold stands of old-growth ponderosa pine, open grassy fields, and cottonwoods along the Clark Fork River. Hiking and fishing are available within its boundaries.
