Frederic Edwin Church, a leading painter of the Hudson River School, designed and lived on this estate, naming it after an ancient Persian fortress-treasure house that also overlooked a river valley. The property centers on an eclectic villa Church built above parkland and a working farm he laid out himself, with views reaching the Hudson River Valley, the Catskill Mountains and the Taconic Range. The site preserves both the house and the surrounding landscape as Church shaped them.
