About Cottonwood Canyon State Park

Ranchland along the lower John Day River became this park's foundation when the state acquired the acreage in 2013, creating the second-largest state park in Oregon at 8,000 acres. The land sits within a wider 18,000-acre recreation area, bordered by 10,000 additional acres of public land that the Bureau of Land Management maintains alongside the state. The river corridor itself forms the core of the protected canyon ground.
