About Occoneechee State Park

Buggs Island Lake borders this 2,698-acre park, formed when the Roanoke and Dan rivers were dammed to create the Kerr Lake reservoir in 1952. The park's name recalls the Occaneechi Indians, who once lived on an island at the rivers' confluence, a site now submerged beneath the reservoir. The land protected here spans nearly 2,700 acres along the lake's shoreline.
