About Beacon Rock State Park
An 848-foot basalt volcanic plug rising on the north shore of the Columbia River gives this park its name and its main feature. Lewis and Clark reached the rock on October 31, 1805, and here took the expedition's first tidal measurements on the river, a sign they were nearing the ocean. The surrounding land is set aside as a geologic preserve and public recreation area within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, along Route 14.
