About Parkin Archeological State Park

The St. Francis and Tyronza rivers meet at the site of a palisaded village that stood here from roughly 1350 to 1650 CE. The park protects this Mississippian-period settlement, considered the type site for the Parkin phase and thought by many archeologists to be part of the province of Casqui, a place Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's expedition documented visiting in 1542. Artifacts recovered from the village, dated between 1400 and 1650 CE, are displayed in the site museum.
