About Benicia Capitol State Historic Park

A restored legislative chamber marks the building where California's lawmakers met from February 1853 to February 1854, before voting to relocate the capital to Sacramento. This is the only surviving capitol from the years before Sacramento took that role. The grounds also hold the Fischer-Hanlon House, an older Benicia structure moved here and turned into a residence in 1858, along with its carriage house, former workers' quarters, and sculptured gardens.
