About Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park

Cliffs gouged out by pressurized water jets rise nearly 600 feet in places, remnants of a pit that stretches 7,000 feet long and up to 3,000 feet wide. The grounds hold the remains of what was once the largest hydraulic gold mine in California, along with Gold Rush-era structures now recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. The mining operation here triggered an 1882 lawsuit against the North Bloomfield Mining and Gravel Company that became a landmark legal case. The park covers 3,143 acres of this altered terrain.
