About Gillette Castle State Park

A stone mansion overlooking the Connecticut River was designed and built by actor William Gillette, known for playing Sherlock Holmes on stage, who lived there from 1919 until his death in 1937. The state bought the property for $29,000 in 1943, six years after his death. The park spans the towns of East Haddam and Lyme, with the house sitting well above the river below.
