About San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park

Stone foundations and earthworks mark the site of a Spanish colonial fort at the meeting point of the St. Marks and Wakulla rivers. The fort passed through the hands of successive nations that held control of the area after Spain first raised wooden buildings and a stockade here in the late 1600s and early 1700s. A hurricane later destroyed those original structures. The grounds preserve this layered military history for visitors to walk through.
