About Indiana Dunes State Park

Sand dunes rising along the Lake Michigan shoreline give this park its shape, with the water forming its entire northwestern border. Most of the eastern section lies within the 1,530-acre Dunes Nature Preserve, which holds the bulk of the hiking trails and dune terrain. The surrounding land falls inside the authorized boundaries of Indiana Dunes National Park, though the offshore water itself is managed by the National Park Service. Richard Lieber looked at this site among the first when building Indiana's state park system, and it earned National Natural Landmark status in 1974.
