Dunes along Lake Michigan separate the water from a set of inland lakes and wetlands that make up this park's core landscape. The area preserves natural features considered uncommon elsewhere in the state, a distinction recognized in 1968 when it was named a National Natural Landmark. Interstate 94 runs adjacent to the park, placing this protected shoreline and dune system within easy reach of the highway.
