About Maquoketa Caves State Park

A cluster of limestone caves gives this park its name, drawing visitors to explore passages carved into the bluffs above the Maquoketa River valley. In 1991, 111 acres on the eastern side of the property were placed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district, recognizing the long-documented significance of the cave system itself. The surrounding grounds include trails connecting the various cave entrances scattered through the terrain.
