About Washington Monument State Park

A 40-foot stone tower built to honor George Washington stands near the summit of South Mountain's Monument Knob, along the route of the Appalachian Trail. The park exists to preserve this monument, which was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It is maintained by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
