About Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area
Former open-pit iron ore mines left behind waste rock piles and deep pits when mining companies walked away more than two decades before the state took over the land. What remains has regenerated into vegetation cover and clear water-filled pits now used for recreation. The Croft Mine Historical Park, once managed by the city, is now folded into this recreation area, tying the former mining operations to the grounds visitors see today.
