About Fort Churchill State Historic Park
The Carson River corridor, added to the park in 1994, runs alongside the ruins of a 1860s United States Army fort and a former way station on the Pony Express and Central Overland Routes. The fort also served as one endpoint of the Fort Churchill and Sand Springs Toll Road. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961, marking its recognized role in that overland transportation history.
