About Landsford Canal State Park

Built between 1820 and 1825 using enslaved labor, the Landsford Canal was constructed to carry boat traffic around rapids on the Catawba River, and its ruins remain within this 448-acre park. Rail transport eventually made the waterway obsolete. The former lock keeper's house now holds an interpretive museum, and the river shoals here support one of the largest surviving stands of the Shoals spider-lily, which flowers from mid-May to mid-June. Hiking, picnicking, boating, and fishing are available on the grounds.
