About Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park
Petrified logs from more than 50 tree species, including ginkgo, redwood, sweetgum, and walnut, lie preserved along the western bank of the Wanapum Reservoir on the Columbia River. The 7,124-acre preserve grew out of discoveries of fossilized wood in the early 1930s, prompting its designation as a national historic preserve alongside its status as a state park. Its extent along the riverbank makes it one of the larger geologic reserves in the state system.
