About Steamboat Rock State Park
A basalt butte rising 800 feet above Banks Lake dominates the landscape here, nearly encircled by the water at the north end of the Grand Coulee. Covering 5,043 acres, the park surrounds Steamboat Rock, whose plateau spans more than 600 acres and once served nomadic Native American tribes and early settlers. During the last ice age, the formation stood as an island where the Columbia River had been rerouted by ice dams, and when those dams burst, the resulting floods carved the Scablands and left the rock stranded in the now-dry coulee.
