About Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park
The Battle of Carnifex Ferry is the reason this 156-acre site was set aside, marking ground fought over during the Civil War and later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The Patterson House Museum stands on the grounds, along with hiking trails, picnic facilities, and three overlooks onto the Gauley River Canyon. A Civil War re-enactment is held each year on the weekend following Labor Day, and the park ranks among the oldest state parks in the country.
