About Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park

November 6, 1863 marks the date of the Battle of Droop Mountain, fought on this mountain and recorded as the last major Civil War engagement in the state. The ground preserves that battlefield, and its path to protection came through John D. Sutton, a Union private who fought there and later pushed for the park's creation as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates. Dedicated on July 4, 1928, it became West Virginia's first state park.
