About Fort Delaware State Park

248 acres of low, marshy land on Pea Patch Island make up this park, sitting in the mid channel of the Delaware River near the bay. The fort was built by the Army in 1815 to guard the harbors of Wilmington and Philadelphia, then burned and rebuilt before the Civil War, when it was converted into a prisoner of war camp. It continued serving as a river defense post through both World Wars until the Defense Department declared the island surplus in 1945.
