About Columbus-Belmont State Park

1934 marks not the fortification itself but the year this ground was set aside to preserve it, a Confederate stronghold built along the Mississippi River during the Civil War. Both Union and Confederate forces recognized the bluff's value in controlling river traffic, and the grounds commemorate the fighting that took place here and across the water in Belmont, Missouri. Visitors can see the remains of the defensive works raised to hold this stretch of the river.
