About Big Oak Tree State Park

A tract of bottomland hardwood forest survived here after the surrounding cropland was drained, and the state set the land aside to protect some of the largest trees found anywhere in Missouri and the nation. Spanning 1,029 acres, the preserve retains wet-mesic forest characteristic of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain within the Gulf Coastal Plain. In 1986 it was designated a National Natural Landmark in recognition of this largely untouched forest type.
