About Purse State Park

1,365 acres make up the Nanjemoy Wildlife Management Area, the larger tract that has absorbed this former state park along the Potomac River. Now known as the Purse Area, the grounds are managed for fossil hunting along the beaches of Wades Bay, at the southern end of the WMA. Shark teeth and Cibicides fossils have been found there.
