About Smallwood State Park

Smallwood's Retreat, the plantation home of Major General William Smallwood, a Continental Army officer who later served as governor of Maryland, is preserved within these grounds. The property sits along Mattawoman Creek and covers 984 acres, with a marina and boat ramps for access to the water. Picnicking facilities, campsites, cabins, trails, and a nature center are also part of the grounds.
