About Mille Lacs Kathio State Park

Nineteen identified archaeological sites sit within this park along Mille Lacs Lake, spanning habitation areas and mound groups dated between 3000 BC and 1750 AD. These remains document Dakota Indian culture and the shifting relationship between Dakota and Ojibwe peoples, including an Archaic-period site showing evidence of copper tool manufacture. Ojibwe oral history recorded by William Whipple Warren describes a battle in which the Ojibwe took control of the area from the Dakota, who had largely moved south by the 18th century.
