About Flandrau State Park
Built along the Cottonwood River in the 1930s as a job creation project, the land was originally shaped around a recreational reservoir. The park's dam suffered repeated flood damage over the decades and was ultimately removed in 1995. It was first known as Cottonwood River State Park, then renamed in 1945 for Charles Eugene Flandrau, who led the defense of New Ulm during the 1862 Dakota War.
