About Minnesota Valley State Recreation Area

Four separate waysides make up this 5,490-acre recreation area, strung along the Minnesota River between Shakopee and Belle Plaine rather than forming one continuous tract. The waysides sit alongside units of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, part of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manage the adjoining lands separately but use matching signage across both, so visitors moving between park and refuge sections see consistent markers throughout.
