About Lake Maria State Park
Rolling, glacially formed hills studded with lakes and wetlands make up the terrain here, much of it covered by a surviving stretch of the Big Woods hardwood forest that once spread across this part of Minnesota. Trails and backcountry routes are built mainly for hikers, backpackers, and horseback riders rather than car campers or day-trip crowds, and the park sees lighter use than other state parks near the Twin Cities. It was set aside in 1963 to give the metro area a nearby stretch of wilderness.
