About Woods Bay State Park
Carolina Bay wetlands here rank among the largest of their kind still remaining. Geologic study by the U.S. Geological Survey has interpreted these bays as thermokarst lakes, formed thousands of years ago when frozen ground thawed and wind and water reshaped the terrain during a colder, drier, windier climate period. That interpretation points to permafrost once reaching this far south during past ice ages. The park preserves this landscape as a record of that ancient environment.
