About Booker T. Washington State Park

African-American units of the Civilian Conservation Corps built this 353-acre park on the shores of Chickamauga Lake. It was created as one of two Tennessee state parks designated for use by Black residents under segregation, a status that lasted until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned discrimination in public accommodations. The lake shoreline remains the main geographic feature of the grounds today.
