About Lake Anna State Park

The lake at the center of this park was formed by damming the North Anna River to supply cooling water for a nearby nuclear power plant. Before that, the ground beneath it was worked as the Goodwin Gold Mine, where gold was first found in 1829. Planning for the park started in 1972, more than a decade before it opened to the public.
